Ph.D. candidate, Stanford University

Rosaley Gai is a Ph.D. candidate in Japanese at Stanford University. She received her M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2020. Her research primarily focuses on depictions of food and eating in modern Japanese literature and media. She has explored topics such as gendered consumption in gurume manga, post-3.11 shifts in foodways as seen in literature and popular media, changing methods of dietary education through Meiji-era publications, and the aesthetics of “taste.” Her hobbies include video games and cooking, and she is fairly confident that she makes the best karaage on this side of the Pacific.
